Why is a physical button safer than using an emergency app on a smartphone?
In a dangerous situation, taking a phone out, unlocking it, and navigating to an app is slow and draws unwanted attention. A physical Flic button allows for "eyes-free" activation. It can be hidden in a pocket, clipped to a sleeve, or worn on a lanyard, allowing a user to trigger a discreet alert by muscle memory without ever looking at a screen.
How does the system share my location during an emergency?
When the button is pressed, the system instantly captures the GPS coordinates from the paired smartphone or the fixed location of a Flic Hub. This information is then sent to emergency contacts or a security dashboard. For indoor use in large buildings, a network of Flic Hubs can provide more granular, room-level accuracy where GPS signals are often blocked.
What happens if I press the button but cannot speak?
The button is designed for silent communication. Once triggered, it can send an automated text, email, or push notification containing your live location and a pre-set SOS message. This ensures that help is dispatched even if you are in a situation where speaking would be dangerous or impossible.
Can the button notify me that help is on the way?
Yes. Through the Flic App, you can configure the button’s built-in LED to provide a subtle vibration or a specific light color once the alert has been successfully received by the server. This "silent feedback" gives the user peace of mind without alerting an aggressor.
How far away from my phone can I be for the button to work?
The button uses Long Range Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and typically maintains a reliable connection up to 50 meters (165 feet) in an open space. In indoor environments with walls, this range may be shorter. If the button loses connection, the user can receive a notification on their phone to ensure they stay within range.
What happens if my phone battery dies or I have no cell service?
The button requires a data connection (via the paired phone or a Flic Hub) to send an alert. To mitigate this risk, our system includes "heart-beat" monitoring through the Device Manager, which can alert administrators if a user's device goes offline, ensuring that safety gaps are identified before an emergency occurs.
Does the system support fall detection?
Our solution for Flic Duo supports fall detection. If it for example detects a sudden impact followed by a period of non-movement, it can automatically trigger an alarm even if the user is unable to press the button.
Is my location being tracked at all times?
Privacy is critical for user adoption. The system is designed to be "alert-only." Location data is typically only transmitted the moment the button is pressed or a safety check-in is performed. This ensures that users feel safe using the device without the fear of being constantly monitored during their private time.
Is the button durable and water-resistant?
Flic buttons are built for everyday wear and are weather-resistant, meaning they can handle light moisture. Their robust design ensures they won't break if dropped during a high-stress encounter.
What is the battery life, and will I need to charge it?
There is no need to charge the button. It runs on a standard coin-cell battery that lasts up to 3 years. When the battery eventually runs low, it can be easily replaced, ensuring the device is always ready for use.
